My Personal Nursing Philosophy Hope G. Slate Fresno Pacific University NURS/310 August 27, 2012 Brenda Laing, R.N., M.S.N., F.N.P. Abstract â€Å"Nursing theories are the creative products of nurses who seek (or sought) to thoughtfully describe the many aspects of nursing in ways that could be studied, evaluated, and used by other nurses. Theories provide structure and order for guiding and improving professional practice, teaching and learning activities, and research.† (Sitzman, 2011) In this paper I will explore nursing theories. I will examine my own personal nursing philosophy based on reading of theorists, personal values and my own personal experiences. Everyone has values, ideas, and beliefs that are unique and different†¦show more content†¦I always wanted to help others and make them feel good. Compassion is a nursing quality that impacts patient care. Next I would like to discuss knowledge, as it is a central issue of professional accountability. Nursing knowledge enables us to justify actions or to stop unsafe or poor practice. Nursing knowledge can mean the difference of life and deat h for some patients. â€Å"Nurses are the unsung teachers of young doctors. In their book Clinical Wisdom and Interventions in Acute and Critical Care, authors Patricia Benner, Patricia Hooper Kyriakidis and Daphne Stannard, all nurses and researchers, describe cases of nurses pointing out to medical interns and residents the warning signs of a patient’s deterioration, correcting their misinterpretations of signs and symptoms, suggesting diagnoses, and anticipating when and how to intervene.†(Gottlieb, 2012). The need to continue to build on the education of nurses is cardinal in the transforming of the health-care system. My next passion that I would like to include in my personal nursing theory is patient advocacy. â€Å"As nurses, we are well –informed and well-educated, and enthusiastic about the well-being of our patients. All of these factors drive us to advocate for our patients.†(Nicoll, 2012).
